Literature Meme: Genres (1/3) > Horror
Horror fiction takes its roots from folklores and religious tradition, which commonly focused on themes of darkness and mysticism, including death, the demonic, the afterlife, and dealings with the devil. Gothic horror became prominent in the 18th century with its focus on the supernatural in written novels, and the Gothic tradition eventually transformed into the modern-day horror genre. By its very definition, horror is supposed to provoke an emotional response in the reader, whether by use of gore, horrific images, the fear of the unknown, or haunting spectres shrouded in darkness. Well-known Gothic horror authors include Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Horace Walpole. Later, H.G. Wells’ and H.P. Lovecraft’s works paved the way for contemporary horror authors such as Anne Rice and Stephen King, who is widely considered the modern-day master of horror.
